ಜಟಾಭುಜಂಗಪಿಂಗಲಸ್ಫುರತ್ಫಣಾಮಣಿಪ್ರಭಾ-ಕದಂಬಕುಂಕುಮದ್ರವಪ್ರಲಿಪ್ತದಿಗ್ವಧೂಮುಖೇ ।

ಮದಾಂಧಸಿಂಧುರಸ್ಫುರತ್ತ್ವಗುತ್ತರೀಯಮೇದುರೇ ಮನೋವಿನೋದಮದ್ಭುತಂ ಬಿಭರ್ತು ಭೂತಭರ್ತರೀ ॥

Meaning

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವು ಶಿವನ ಭವ್ಯವಾದ ಮತ್ತು ಭಯಂಕರವಾದ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನ ಜಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಸರ್ಪ, ಅದರ ರತ್ನದ ಕಾಂತಿ, ಅವನು ಧರಿಸಿರುವ ಆನೆಯ ಚರ್ಮ - ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಅವನ ದೈವಿಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, ಭಕ್ತನು ಅಂತಹ ಶಿವನಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾದ ಆನಂದವನ್ನು ಕರುಣಿಸುವಂತೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಯಾರ ಜಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ಪವಿದೆಯೋ, ಆ ಸರ್ಪದ ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಕೆಂಗಂದು ಬಣ್ಣದ ಹೆಡೆಯ ರತ್ನದ ಪ್ರಕಾಶವು ಕೇಸರಿ ಲೇಪನದಂತೆ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳೆಂಬ ವಧುಗಳ ಮುಖಗಳನ್ನು ಅಲಂಕರಿಸುತ್ತದೆಯೋ; ಮದೋನ್ಮತ್ತ ಆನೆಯ ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಚರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಮೇಲು ಹೊದಿಕೆಯಾಗಿ ಧರಿಸಿ ಗಂಭೀರನಾಗಿರುವನೋ - ಅಂತಹ, ಸರ್ವ ಜೀವಿಗಳ ಒಡೆಯನಾದ ಶಿವನು, ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಆನಂದವನ್ನು ನೀಡಲಿ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವು ಶಿವನ ಸರ್ವವ್ಯಾಪಿತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶ್ವನಿಯಂತ್ರಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಸಾರುತ್ತದೆ. ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳೆಂಬ ವಧುಗಳ ಮುಖಗಳು ಅವನ ಸರ್ಪದ ರತ್ನದ ಕಾಂತಿಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವುದು ಅವನ ಪ್ರಭಾವವು ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಹರಡಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಸಂಕೇತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮದೋನ್ಮತ್ತ ಆನೆಯ ಚರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿರುವುದು ಅವನು ಅಹಂಕಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಅಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿ ನಿಂತವನು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಶಿವನ ಧ್ಯಾನದಿಂದ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಆನಂದ ಲಭಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಇದರ ಮಹತ್ವ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವು ರಾವಣನಿಂದ ರಚಿತವಾದ ‘ಶಿವ ತಾಂಡವ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ’ದ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ರಾವಣನು ಕೈಲಾಸ ಪರ್ವತವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಿದಾಗ, ಶಿವನು ತನ್ನ ಕಾಲಿನ ಹೆಬ್ಬೆರಳಿನಿಂದ ಪರ್ವತವನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿ, ರಾವಣನ ಕೈಗಳನ್ನು ಅದರಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಲುಕಿಸಿದನು. ಆಗ ರಾವಣನು ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಸ್ತುತಿಸಿ ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರವನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿದನೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನ ಭಕ್ತಿಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿದ ಶಿವನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ, ‘ಚಂದ್ರಹಾಸ’ ಎಂಬ ಖಡ್ಗವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದನು. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವು ರಾವಣನು ಕಂಡ ಶಿವನ ಭವ್ಯ ರೂಪದ ವರ್ಣನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.

This shloka vividly describes Lord Shiva’s magnificent and formidable form. The serpent in His matted hair, the radiance of its jewel, and the elephant skin He wears all reflect His divine power. Ultimately, the devotee prays for eternal bliss to be bestowed upon his mind by such a Shiva.

May He, in whose matted hair resides a serpent, from whose glittering reddish-brown hood-jewel a profusion of radiance, like a saffron paste, anoints the faces of the maidens of the directions; He who is majestic, wearing the shining skin of a maddened elephant as His upper garment – may that Lord of all beings (Shiva) bestow wonderful delight in my mind.

This shloka signifies Shiva’s omnipresence and cosmic control. The faces of the maidens of directions being illuminated by the radiance of His serpent’s jewel symbolize His influence spreading everywhere. Wearing the skin of a maddened elephant indicates His conquest over ego and ignorance. The significance lies in the belief that meditating on such a form of Shiva brings bliss to the mind.

This shloka is part of the ‘Shiv Tandav Stotram’, composed by Ravana. Legend has it that when Ravana tried to lift Mount Kailash, Shiva pressed the mountain with his toe, trapping Ravana’s hands underneath. In immense pain, Ravana sang praises of Shiva by composing this stotram. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva forgave him and bestowed upon him the divine sword ‘Chandrahasa’. This shloka is a depiction of Shiva’s majestic form as perceived by Ravana.

ಯಾರ ಜಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕೆಂಗಂದು ಬಣ್ಣದ ಸರ್ಪದ ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಹೆಡೆಯ ರತ್ನದ ಪ್ರಕಾಶದ ಸಮೂಹವು, ಕೇಸರಿ ಲೇಪನದಂತೆ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳೆಂಬ ವಧುಗಳ ಮುಖಗಳನ್ನು ಅಲಂಕರಿಸುತ್ತದೆಯೋ (ಅಂತಹ ಶಿವನಲ್ಲಿ).

In Him (Shiva), on the faces of the maidens of the directions (which are) smeared by a saffron-paste-like multitude of radiance from the glittering jewel on the hood of the reddish-brown serpent in His matted hair.

May (He), the Lord of all beings, bestow wonderful delight in my mind.
