One day, she found two lotus flowers missing. To complete her worship and fulfill her vow, she decided to offer her own eyes, which are compared to lotuses. As she was about to pluck her eyes, Lord Shiva appeared, pleased with her extreme devotion, and stopped her. To honor her unparalleled devotion and to keep her eternally by his side, he transformed her into the Bilva tree, making the tree itself sacred and an embodiment of devotion. 2. Origin from Goddess Parvati: Another legend states that the Bilva tree originated from the sweat drops of Goddess Parvati (Shiva’s divine consort) that fell on the Mandara Mountain. Because it sprang from the essence of Parvati, it is believed that the Goddess herself resides in the Bilva tree, specifically in its roots, trunk, and branches. This makes the Bilva leaf an extremely potent and beloved offering to Shiva, as it carries the essence of his divine consort. 3. Symbolism of the Trifoliate Leaf: The Bilva leaf is typically trifoliate (having three leaflets), which is highly symbolic. It is believed to represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva, or the Holy Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara), or the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas). Offering such a symbolically rich leaf to Shiva signifies devotion to the ultimate reality encompassing creation, preservation, and dissolution.
