नमामीशमीशाननिर्वाणरूपं विभुं व्यापकं ब्रह्मवेदस्वरूपम् ।
निजं निर्गुणं निर्विकल्पं निरीहं चिदाकाशमाकाशवासं भजेऽहम् ॥
निराकारमोंकारमूलं तुरीयं गिराज्ञानगोतीतमीशं गिरीशम् ।
करालं महाकालकालं कृपालं गुणागारसंसारपारं नतोऽहम् ॥
तुषाराद्रिसंकाशगौरं गभीरं मनोभूतकोटिप्रभाश्रीशरीरम् ।
स्फुरन्मौलिकल्लोलिनीचारुगङ्गा लसद्भालबालेन्दु कण्ठे भुजङ्गा ॥
चलत्कुण्डलं भ्रूसुनेत्रं विशालं प्रसन्नाननं नीलकण्ठं दयालम् ।
मृगाधीशचर्माम्बरं मुण्डमालं प्रियं शङ्करं सर्वनाथं भजामि ॥
प्रचण्डं प्रकृष्टं प्रगल्-भं परेशमखण्डमजं भानुकोटिप्रकाशम् ।
त्रयःशूलनिर्मूलनं शूलपाणिं भजेऽहं भवानीपतिं भावगम्यम् ॥
कलातीतकल्याणकल्पान्तकारी सदा सज्जनानन्ददाता पुरारी ।
चिदानन्दसन्दोहमोहापहारी प्रसीद प्रसीद प्रभो मन्मथारी ॥
न यावदुमानाथपादारविन्दं भजन्तीह लोके परे वा नराणाम् ।
न तावत्सुखं शान्ति सन्तापनाशं प्रसीद प्रभो सर्वभूताधिवासम् ॥
न जानामि योगं जपं नैव पूजां नतोऽहं सदा सर्वदा शम्भु तुभ्यम् ।
जराजन्मदुःखौघतातप्यमानं प्रभो पाहि आपन्नमामीशशम्भो ॥
रुद्राष्टकमिदं प्रोक्तं विप्रेण हरतोषये ।
ये पठन्ति नरा भक्त्या तेषां शम्भुः प्रसीदति ॥
इति श्रीरामचरितमानसे उत्तरकाण्डे श्रीगोस्वामितुलसीदासकृतं श्रीरुद्राष्टकं सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Meaning / Summary¶
ശിവഭക്തർക്ക് രുദ്രാഷ്ടകത്തിന് വലിയ ആത്മീയ പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. ഈ സ്തോത്രം ജപിക്കുന്നത് മനസ്സിനെ ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാനും, ശിവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം നേടാനും, സമാധാനവും ഐശ്വര്യവും ആത്മീയ മോക്ഷവും നൽകാനും സഹായിക്കുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ സംരക്ഷകനായും മോക്ഷം നൽകുന്നവനായും ശിവന്റെ മഹത്വത്തെ ഇത് എടുത്തു കാണിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് ആന്തരിക സമാധാനത്തിനും ധൈര്യത്തിനും ഭൗതിക ആസക്തികളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മോചനത്തിനും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പ്രാർത്ഥനയാണ്.
രുദ്രാഷ്ടകം എന്നത് ശ്രീരാമചരിതമാനസത്തിൽ ഗോസ്വാമി തുളസീദാസ് രചിച്ച, പരമശിവനെ സ്തുതിക്കുന്ന എട്ട് ശ്ലോകങ്ങളടങ്ങിയ ഒരു ശക്തമായ സ്തോത്രമാണ്. ഇത് ശിവന്റെ ദിവ്യഗുണങ്ങളെയും, ഭാവങ്ങളെയും വർണ്ണിക്കുന്നു. ശിവനെ അദൃശ്യനും, ആനന്ദസ്വരൂപനും, ദുഷ്ടനാശകനും, പരമമായ യാഥാർത്ഥ്യവും, അന്തിമമായ ഐശ്വര്യദാതാവും ആയി ഇതിൽ പ്രകീർത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഭക്തർ ശിവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹവും സംരക്ഷണവും മോക്ഷവും അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്ന പ്രാർത്ഥനയാണിത്.
രുദ്രാഷ്ടകം സ്തോത്രം ഗോസ്വാമി തുളസീദാസ് തന്റെ മഹാകാവ്യമായ രാമചരിതമാനസത്തിലെ ഉത്തരകാണ്ഡത്തിൽ രചിച്ചതാണ്. ഐതിഹ്യം അനുസരിച്ച്, ലോമശ മഹർഷി ഗരുഡനോട് ഇത് ചൊല്ലിക്കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിലുപരിയായി, രാവണനെ തോൽപ്പിക്കാനും സീതയെ രക്ഷിക്കാനുമുള്ള ദൗത്യത്തിൽ വിജയം നേടുന്നതിനായി, ലങ്കയിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെടുന്നതിന് മുൻപ് രാമേശ്വരത്ത് ശിവലിംഗം സ്ഥാപിച്ച വേളയിൽ ശ്രീരാമൻ ഈ സ്തോത്രം ജപിച്ചിരുന്നതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത് ശിവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം തേടാനും തടസ്സങ്ങളെ അതിജീവിക്കാനുമുള്ള രുദ്രാഷ്ടകത്തിന്റെ വലിയ ശക്തിയും പ്രാധാന്യവും എടുത്തു കാണിക്കുന്നു.
Rudrashtakam holds immense spiritual significance for devotees of Lord Shiva. Chanting this hymn is believed to purify the mind, invoke Shiva’s benevolent presence, and bestow peace, prosperity, and spiritual liberation. It emphasizes the greatness of Shiva as the cosmic dancer, the protector of the universe, and the one who grants salvation. It’s a prayer for inner peace, courage, and detachment from material desires.
Rudrashtakam is a powerful Sanskrit hymn of eight stanzas dedicated to Lord Shiva, composed by Goswami Tulsidas. It extols Shiva’s divine attributes, describing him as the supreme reality, beyond perception, the destroyer of evil, the ultimate benefactor, and the embodiment of bliss. The hymn expresses devotion and seeks his blessings, protection, and liberation from worldly suffering.
The Rudrashtakam hymn is famously associated with Goswami Tulsidas, who composed it in the Uttar Kanda of his epic work, Ramcharitmanas. According to the narrative, it was recited by Lomasha Rishi to Garuda. More prominently, Lord Rama himself is said to have chanted this very hymn while establishing the Rameshwaram Lingam on the shores before embarking on the journey to Lanka. He invoked Lord Shiva’s blessings for success in his mission to defeat Ravana and rescue Sita. This act underscores the immense power and significance attributed to the Rudrashtakam in seeking divine favor and overcoming obstacles.
