शालिग्राम शिलामेकां विप्राणां जातु चार्पयेत्
सोमयज्ञ महापुण्यं एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
दन्तिकोटि सहस्राणि वाजपेय शतानि च
कोटि कन्या महादानं एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
लक्ष्म्या स्तनुत उत्पन्नं महादेवस्य च प्रियम्

Meaning / Summary¶
ബിൽവാഷ്ടകത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം, ആത്മാർത്ഥമായ ഭക്തിയും ലളിതമായ വഴിപാടുകളും ആത്മീയ ജീവിതത്തിൽ എത്രത്തോളം പ്രധാനമാണെന്ന് അത് പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു എന്നതിലാണ്. കൂവളത്തില ശിവന് അങ്ങേയറ്റം പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടതാണെന്നും, ഭക്തനെ ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാനും മോക്ഷം നൽകാനും കഴിവുള്ള നിഗൂഢ ശക്തികൾ അതിനുണ്ടെന്നും ഇത് അടിവരയിടുന്നു. ബാഹ്യമായ ആചാരങ്ങളും ഭൗതിക സമ്പത്തും ഭക്തി നിറഞ്ഞ ഹൃദയത്തിന് താഴെയാണെന്ന് ഈ സ്തോത്രം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. മൂന്ന് ഇതളുകളുള്ള കൂവളത്തില വിവിധ ത്രിത്വങ്ങളെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ, കൂവളത്തില സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഒരാളുടെ അഹംഭാവം, ആഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ, കർമ്മങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെല്ലാം ഈശ്വരന് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനെ പ്രതീകപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ഇത് ഭക്തരെ ഈ പ്രത്യേകവും പവിത്രവുമായ വഴിപാടിലൂടെ ശിവനുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു, ഇത് അവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹത്തിനും ആത്മീയ സംതൃപ്തിക്കും നേരിട്ടുള്ള പാതയായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ബിൽവാഷ്ടകം എട്ട് ശ്ലോകങ്ങളുള്ള ഒരു സ്തോത്രമാണ്. ഇത് പരമശിവന് ബിൽവപത്രം (കൂവളത്തില) സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം വാഴ്ത്തുന്നു. ഓരോ ശ്ലോകവും കൂവളത്തിലയുടെ അതുല്യമായ ഗുണങ്ങളെയും, ശിവന്റെ മൂന്ന് കണ്ണുകൾ, ത്രിഗുണങ്ങൾ (സത്വം, രജസ്സ്, തമസ്സ്), അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ത്രിമൂർത്തികൾ (ബ്രഹ്മാവ്, വിഷ്ണു, മഹേശ്വരൻ) എന്നിവയെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന അതിന്റെ ത്രിത്വ സ്വഭാവത്തെയും വർണ്ണിക്കുന്നു. വിവിധ യാഗങ്ങൾ, തീർത്ഥാടനങ്ങൾ, ദാനധർമ്മങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ ശ്രേഷ്ഠമാണ് ഒരൊറ്റ കൂവളത്തില ശിവന് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് ഈ സ്തോത്രം ഊന്നിപ്പറയുന്നു. ഇത് ഭഗവാനെ പ്രസാദിപ്പിക്കുകയും വലിയ ആത്മീയ ഫലങ്ങൾ നൽകുകയും, പാപങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് മോചനം നൽകി ശിവലോകപ്രാപ്തിക്ക് വഴിയൊരുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ ഭക്തിപരമായ ലളിതമായ പ്രവൃത്തിയിലൂടെ ശിവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം തേടാൻ സ്തോത്രം ആവർത്തിച്ച് ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.
The significance of Bilvashtakam lies in its profound message that true devotion and sincere offerings, even a simple one like a Bilva leaf, are paramount in spiritual practice. It underscores the belief that the Bilva leaf is immensely dear to Lord Shiva and possesses mystical properties capable of purifying the devotee and granting liberation. The hymn teaches that external rituals and material wealth are secondary to a heart filled with devotion. Offering Bilva leaves symbolizes surrendering one’s ego, desires, and actions to the divine, as the three leaflets represent various trinities, uniting the devotee with the ultimate reality. The Bilvashtakam is a hymn of eight verses dedicated to Lord Shiva, glorifying the Bilva leaf (wood apple tree leaf) as the most sacred offering to Him. Each verse describes the leaf’s unique qualities, its threefold nature representing the three eyes of Shiva, the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas), or the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara).
