त्रिजन्मपाप संहारं एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
अखण्ड बिल्व पात्रेण पूजिते नन्दिकेश्र्वरे
शुद्ध्यन्ति सर्वपापेभ्यो एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
शालिग्राम शिलामेकां विप्राणां जातु चार्पयेत्
सोमयज्ञ महापुण्यं एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
दन्तिकोटि सहस्राणि वाजपेय शतानि च
कोटि कन्या महादानं एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
लक्ष्म्या स्तनुत उत्पन्नं महादेवस्य च प्रियम्
बिल्ववृक्षं प्रयच्छामि एक बिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥
दर्शनं बिल्ववृक्षस्य स्पर्शनं पापनाशनम्

Meaning / Summary¶
બિલ્વાષ્ટકમ્નું મહત્વ ભગવાન શિવની પૂજામાં બિલ્વપત્રના ઊંડા મહત્વ પર ભાર મૂકે છે. આ સ્તોત્ર દાવો કરે છે કે ભગવાન શિવને એક પણ બિલ્વપત્ર અર્પણ કરવું એ મોટા યજ્ઞો, બલિદાન કે યાત્રાઓ કરવા કરતાં વધુ પુણ્યદાયી છે. તે દર્શાવે છે કે સાચી ભક્તિ, ભલે તે એક સરળ કાર્ય દ્વારા હોય, ભૂતકાળના કર્મોને શુદ્ધ કરી શકે છે, આધ્યાત્મિક મુક્તિ પ્રદાન કરી શકે છે, અને તમામ સાંસારિક તથા આધ્યાત્મિક આશીર્વાદ આપી શકે છે. તે એ માન્યતા પર પ્રકાશ પાડે છે કે બિલ્વપત્ર ભગવાન શિવને અત્યંત પ્રિય છે અને તેમની કૃપા તથા આધ્યાત્મિક એકતા પ્રાપ્ત કરવાનું સીધું સાધન છે.
બિલ્વાષ્ટકમ્ એ ભગવાન શિવને સમર્પિત આઠ શ્લોકોનું ભક્તિમય સ્તોત્ર છે, જે બિલ્વપત્ર (બીલીનું પાન) અર્પણ કરવાના ગુણ અને આધ્યાત્મિક લાભોનું વર્ણન કરે છે. દરેક શ્લોક બિલ્વપત્રની પવિત્રતા, ખાસ કરીને તેના ત્રિદળી સ્વરૂપનું પુનરાવર્તન કરે છે, જે ત્રિમૂર્તિ (બ્રહ્મા, વિષ્ણુ, મહેશ્વર) અથવા શિવના ત્રણ નેત્રોનું પ્રતીક છે. તે વર્ણવે છે કે બિલ્વપત્ર અર્પણ કરવાથી પાપોનો નાશ થાય છે, સમૃદ્ધિ પ્રાપ્ત થાય છે અને મનોકામનાઓ પૂર્ણ થાય છે. તે ભક્તિના આ સરળ છતાં શક્તિશાળી કાર્યમાં સમાવિષ્ટ ઊંડી શ્રદ્ધાને સુંદર રીતે વ્યક્ત કરે છે.
The significance of Bilvashtakam lies in its emphasis on the profound importance of the Bilva leaf in Shiva worship. The hymn asserts that offering even a single Bilva leaf to Lord Shiva is more meritorious than performing grand rituals, sacrifices, or pilgrimages. It signifies that true devotion, even through a simple act, can cleanse past karma, grant spiritual liberation, and bestow all worldly and spiritual blessings. It highlights the belief that the Bilva leaf is highly beloved by Lord Shiva and is a direct means to attain His grace and spiritual union.
The Bilvashtakam is an eight-verse devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, extolling the virtues and spiritual benefits of offering a Bilva leaf (Aegle marmelos) to Him. Each verse reiterates the sanctity of the Bilva leaf, particularly its three-lobed form, symbolizing the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara) or the three eyes of Shiva, and describes how its offering purifies sins, brings prosperity, and fulfills desires.
