ज्यायसी चेत्कर्मणस्ते मता बुद्धिर्जनार्दन ।

तत्किं कर्मणि घोरे मां नियोजयसि केशव ॥

ಅರ್ಜುನ ಉವಾಚ।

ಜ್ಯಾಯಸೀ ಚೇತ್ಕರ್ಮಣಸ್ತೇ ಮತಾ ಬುದ್ಧಿರ್ಜನಾರ್ಧನ ।

ತತ್ಕಿಂ ಕರ್ಮಣಿ ಘೋರೇ ಮಾಂ ನಿಯೋಜಯಸಿ ಕೇಶವ ॥

jyāyasī cet karmaṇas te matā buddhir janārdana।

tat kiṁ karmaṇi ghore māṁ niyojayasi keśava॥

Meaning / Summary¶

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವು ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಕರ್ಮದ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಗೊಂದಲವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ವಿಷಯವಾದ ಕರ್ಮಯೋಗದ ಚರ್ಚೆಗೆ ನಾಂದಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ: ಜನಾರ್ದನ, ಕರ್ಮಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯೇ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವೆಂದು ನೀನು ಭಾವಿಸಿದರೆ, ಕೇಶವ, ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಈ ಭೀಕರ ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕೆ ತೊಡಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿ?

ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಜ್ಞಾನವು ಕರ್ಮಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವೆಂದು ನೀನು ಭಾವಿಸಿದರೆ, ಯುದ್ಧದಂತಹ ಘೋರ ಕರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕೆ ತೊಡಗಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ, “ಓ ಜನಾರ್ದನ (ಕೃಷ್ಣ), ಕರ್ಮಯೋಗಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಜ್ಞಾನಯೋಗವೇ ಉತ್ತಮವೆಂದು ನೀನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರೆ, ಓ ಕೇಶವ, ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಈ ಘೋರವಾದ ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕೆ ತೊಡಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿ? ನಿನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಜ್ಞಾನವೇ ಮುಖ್ಯವೆಂದಾದರೆ, ಯುದ್ಧದಂತಹ ಕ್ರೂರ ಕರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿ?”

This verse highlights Arjuna’s confusion regarding the importance of knowledge versus action, and sets the stage for the central theme of the Bhagavad Gita: Karma Yoga.

Arjuna said: If you consider that intelligence is superior to action, O Janardana, then why do you engage me in this terrible action, O Keshava?

Arjuna questions Krishna, asking why he is being urged to engage in terrible action like war if knowledge is considered superior to action.

Arjuna addresses Krishna, saying, “O Janardana (Krishna), if you believe that knowledge is superior to action, then why, O Keshava, are you urging me to engage in this dreadful war? If knowledge is paramount according to you, why are you prompting me to perform such a cruel action as war?”

ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದದ್ದು ಉತ್ತಮವಾದದ್ದು, ದೊಡ್ಡದು		Superior More excellent, greater.
चेत्	ಚೇತ್		cet
ಆದರೆ ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ, ಹಾಗಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ		If In the event that.
कर्मणः	ಕರ್ಮಣಃ		karmaṇas
ಕರ್ಮಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಿಂತ		Than action Compared to work or activity.

ನಿನ್ನ ನಿಮ್ಮದು		Your Belonging to you.
मता	ಮತಾ		matā
ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ, ಭಾವನೆ		Considered Regarded, thought of.
बुद्धिः	ಬುದ್ಧಿಃ		buddhir
ಬುದ್ಧಿ		Intelligence Wisdom, intellect.
जनार्दन	ಜನಾರ್ಧನ		janārdana
ಜನಾರ್ದನ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಹೆಸರು, ಜನರನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವವನು		O Janardana An epithet of Krishna, meaning ‘one who delivers people’.

नियोजयसि	ನಿಯೋಜಯಸಿ		niyojayasi
ತೊಡಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿ ನಿಯೋಜಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿ, ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿ		Do you engage Do you employ, do you urge.
केशव	ಕೇಶವ		keśava
ಕೇಶವ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಹೆಸರು, ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಕೂದಲು ಉಳ್ಳವನು		O Keshava An epithet of Krishna, meaning ‘one with beautiful hair’ or ‘slayer of Keshi demon’.
