Meaning / Summary

This verse highlights the roles of Prakriti (primordial matter) and Purusha (the Supreme Being) in the creation of the universe. The Supreme Being (Krishna) impregnates Prakriti with the seed of consciousness, resulting in the manifestation of all beings. It emphasizes the divine origin of all creation and the interconnectedness of everything in the universe.

My womb is the great Brahman; in that I place the seed. From that, O Bharata, is the birth of all beings.

Krishna explains that He implants the seed in the great Brahman, which is His womb, leading to the birth of all beings.

In this verse, Krishna explains the process of creation. He declares that the ‘Mahat Brahma’ or the Great Brahman (primordial matter or Prakriti) is His womb, implying it is the material cause of all existence. He deposits the ‘seed’ (the life force or consciousness) into this womb, initiating the process of creation. Consequently, all beings are born from this union. Krishna addresses Arjuna as ‘Bharata,’ a descendant of Bharata, emphasizing Arjuna’s noble lineage and reminding him of his duty to uphold dharma.
