Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program. Basically a spreadsheet organizes your data into horizontal rows vertical columns. In other words it organizes your data into tabular format. There are many spreadsheet programs available in market. Microsoft Excel is one of them. So is OpenOffice calc and libreoffice calc.

Traditionally spreadsheets were extensively used by accountants. Generally for basic budgeting and balance sheets. With computers is coming into picture, spreadsheets got more and more advanced. Many new features were added into the spreadsheet programs but primarily for the use of the Accountants. As of today there are spreadsheet software applications available that run on cloud and can do many complicated jobs/calculations in a fraction of second. Of-course we would not talk about that in this book. We would focus on features available on your day-to-day software on the developer’s machine which can be used to make him/her more productive
